The Covid-19 virus led to many people being quarantined or asked to stay at home. Social distancing and working from home, as well as not gathering in large groups means making a shift in our lives. It also means that taking a moment to escape in books might be a good idea. Our guest, Diana Giovinazzo discusses ideas to get us through, as well as reflections on Italian history and the resilient spirits we have when dealing with adversity.

Listen as Diana and host Desireé Duffy find ways to make the most of a difficult situation. After all, there are many benefits to reading. It helps expand our empathy, makes us smarter, and gives us insights into new perspectives

When stuck inside, consider reading to or with your kids. Give them books to read—or to listen to. Digital books and audio books are often quick and easy downloads. If they are old enough, give them books to read and do a book report on. Maybe have them read aloud to you, or they could even perform a passage from the book, or a short play.

For yourself, consider creating your own reading list and expand your horizons by reading outside your genre. Find an online book club, or join an organization like the Womens National Book Association, or a writers group if you are a reader and a writer.

Diana Giovinazzo is the author of the forthcoming book The Woman in Red. She is an expert when it comes to historical fiction, as well as the president of the LA chapter of the Womens National Book Association. She is also one of the hosts of the popular podcast, Wine Women Words.
