Books That Make You Want to Undertake an Adventurous Road Trip
Many of us wish for a long adventure, to just pack up and hit the open road. Life, however, often holds us back. We find we can’t just up and go somewhere for an extended period of time. Or can we?
From 2017 to 2021, Mary Hollendoner and her family road-tripped from Northern California down to Patagonia, Argentina, in an old 90s camper van with her husband and six-year-old daughter. Traveling almost thirty-thousand miles, they encountered many adventures, such as an angry and potentially drunk mob in quake-shattered Mexico, being caught amidst a political revolution in Bolivia, and having to evacuate a wildfire. All such adventures came to a head, though, when COVID struck, forcing them to remain in Argentina for over a year.
In her book award-winning book “Monkeys on the Road”, now an Amazon bestseller, Hollendoner chronicles her family’s many encounters on the trip. And despite all the more dangerous aspects, the heart of the story remains the many local people who welcomed them in, who treated them with nothing but generosity—and the occasional, delicious homecooked meal.
